VIDFest Notebook Part Two - Point - Oh
BlogFinally online here this afternoon and in the Creativity Panel with a fashion designer, a theme park designers, a comic and a giant spider maker riffing on taking ideas into reality so, ... here since KK is rocking the camera today, i'll compile a few highlights of the day with his snaps as well as other Vidfest-tagged pics on Flickr.
Chris Anderson's Presentation about the Economics of Free
Chris is an economist and busts out the fundamental maxims of the macro-science and applies these universal laws to practical daily micro-economics. He's a fine story teller and quick on his feet and you can tell the well runs deep.
RCS comrade Roland joined the packed house to hear Chris explain how all things (products, services, utilities, factors) which can become digital, will AND all things that a re digital will eventually be free. The trick - dear entrepreneurs - is to find the scarcities created in the realm of abundance and create a biz plan around that. Laden with examples - read the article in Wired and look for the forthcoming book, called Free, which will be sold for $0. I recorded the speech so look for a forthcoming podcast.

Crowd Sourcing Panel
Next up was a discussion about crowd sourcing (i.e. rallying up participation) to make communities vital and alive and accountable rather than obligatory or sedate.
Derek of Fray Mag etc., our new pal Jasmine of Cambrian House, and Matt from Zeroes to Heroes riffed with the moderator and the audience to tease out the fundamental questions like "What can you expect for free?" "How do you relinquish control?" "When is crowd sourcing ineffective?" "What are ways to engage?" "How to sort out ownership conundrums?"
Great questions from media pundit/producer Tod Maffin, Irwin of Gallery Gachet, KK and others. I think this topic (which is truly central to my professional life) deserves some more pixels but i'll set that aside for now in the interest of time.
KK Chimes in with some related thoughts and a crowd sourced artist statement in Kris Krug Artist Statement - Crowd Sourcing Styleé.
Dooce and Mighty Girl
These two engaging and talented bloggers turned entrepreneurs charmed the crowd with candid anecdotes rolled into a power point "12 step program" of tips and practical advice to maximize expression while:
- staying out of trouble
- not ruining relationship
- not angering friends
- not baiting trolls
- sorting out nerd fights
- maintaining familial relationships
- etc.
plus: evolving as a writer/person/blog, dealing with backlash and so on.
As you might expect from rather transparent bloggers, they rolled through some "adult" topics to the amusement of the assembled.
The VIDFest "it" girls are loaded-up with media forays and were last seen in a camera-fied conversation in the lobby with lights, make-up and everythang.

Creativity Panel
OK, these guys are loosening up and there is a giant spinning wheel where an audience member could win a ham (or just choose the next talking point) - really, a ham, it's a long story ... but it's time to spin for a salted Ham.
UPDATE: The ham was won by a nice young man in a brown shirt who wonders how to take lotteries online AND Evan Biddell just advised Internet Strip Poker as a solution.
