Thanks for having us, CCI2008

Well, the three days of the CCI2008 conference are coming to a close. Unfortunately, I had to head out a little early due to feeling a little under the weather, but it gives me a chance to get this blog post up.

My presentation at 11am this morning went pretty well, I think. I had to scramble last minute to get a video adapter (thanks, Paul Brown from Quark!). But oh no, no remote clicker to advance my presentation while I wander around the room!

Well, Salling Clicker to the rescue on my Mac and on my cellphone, using Bluetooth. There were some fun technical snafus and the Bluetooth only lasted about half way, but I definitely liked the way I could control the system from my phone.

Here is the SlideShare link to my presentation:

Please also do go and vote on my session on the Confabb site if you attended. I'd love some direct feedback. From my point of view it was fun and I got lots of audience participation. Special shout out to Todd O'Neill from DoingMedia for participation, although lots of people got into things, including Michael Priestly.

Djun and I talked with Michael Priestley (who just happens to be the Lead IBM DITA Architect) about DITA over lunch. In particular, DITA support in Drupal. The main dita.xml.org website actually runs on Drupal, which is fantastic.

So, I'll be talking a bit more with Michael about how to "pitch" DITA to the Drupal community. It will come at an interesting time as we explore the Semantic Web technologies. My very very brief summary is that DITA is sort of like a universal import / export format for content, component content, mappings, and topics. Heck, even there I got a bit confusing. I'll be looking for some "intro to DITA" slides from Michael to help understand this more.

Thanks to the CCI2008 conference organizers (esp. Rahel), speakers, and attendees. It was a really great event, from which I originally really didn't know what to expect. I have lots of follow ups to do, and it was definitely a great experience.

Open source and your non profit

Blog
created on 周二, 2006-05-30 09:17

I'm giving a presentation on open source and your non-profit as part of the NetSquared "Remote" Conference. It will likely pull some elements from a presentation I gave called Open Source and Your Business. I'll be talking about the culture/philosophy behind open source, how it aligns with the some of the needs of non profits, but also the business and technical aspects of open source. The big tension is while non profits understand and are used to the sharing/cooperative nature of open source, there is often a lack of expertise in the technology component.

The remote section is using a tool called Gabbly, which embeds a chat window directly into the page. It even has an RSS feed which "archives" the flow of chat conversations. Very cool.

Please bring your own thoughts, comments, and questions and join me for the live chat tomorrow, May 31st, at 1pm PST on the remote page.

Music 2.0 presentation slides

Blog

This weekend I had the pleasure of giving a talk on the future (as well as the history) of music distribution and recording technology for the Northern Voice conference. I said I’d put my slides on line, so here they are, attached to the bottom of this post.

I also collected a bunch of links on del.icio.us when I was doing some research, and you can see those here>>.

Consider all materials Creative Commons, and thanks to those who could make it down for the talk!

Web 2.0 and Personal Brand Development Presentation

Blog
created on 周四, 2005-11-24 19:31

Jame Healy invited me over to Sunaptic this morning to give a little talk about personal brand development (and Web 2.0). Sort of not necessarily in that order.

The funny thing, of course, is that, Kris and Jame are highly ranked for the search phrase "personal brand development". Jame feels quite strongly about this, and could have probably given a better presentation than I did...I'm going to be looking for more posts from him on this topic, especially the role of companies in working with employees. Here's the presentation: Web 2.0 and Personal Brand Development (PDF) (might update this later to include the notes version)

My take on personal brand development? A respected, well-known employee is a credit to their employer, just as working for a high-profile company reflects well on the employee. Forward thinking companies should encourage and reward personal brand development. Interestingly enough, François Nonnenmacher had a great synthesis post about this very topic this morning, called Personal vs. Professional Identity.
