DrupalCamp Toronto and BarCamp TDot

Roland has done a great job posting videos and other content about the Drupal Camp Toronto. Friday was an absolutely fantastic day. It took place at the Centre for Social Innovation, ably facilitated by Jason Diceman and Philip Smith.

There were two tracks for the day, roughly split into talks between newer and advanced users. From the round the room intros of who was attending, I figured there was a need for a "I don't fit" track, so I volunteered to lead the rooftop gang. This was an interesting cross section of folks that talked about lots of things, and led to the realization that a session on CiviCRM was needed.

Joe Murray facilitated the second session, talking about CiviCRM and we found out that there are a lot of people in Canada looking for solutions in this space. I encouraged Joe, Alan Dixon (likely also Mike Gifford, who wasn't in attendance), and others to step up and promote the concept of "CiviCRM.ca". The main CiviCRM team is necessarily focused on US-centric issues, so this would be a chance to tackle issues like localization and non-US mapping.

The site recipes section at the end was great -- everyone stepped up and showed a little something that many people had never seen before, showcasing sites and/or features of Drupal. I demoed the Liquid Wiki module, which implements a Mediawiki parser and the accompanying functionality. We've got it running at test.bryght.com, sign up for an account if you want to test it. I also briefly showed off groups.drupal.org, which is showing great promise as a way to further collaborate and organize.

Going to BarCamp Tdot and DrupalCamp

The Mesh Conference schedule was announced today. There's even some western Canadian people like Michael Tippett, Tris Hussey and Paul Kedrosky, cool (hey what about Boris, Alex, Dick, etc. like I suggested in my previous Mesh Conference post?)! Looks like a great conference if you can afford the time and the dineros :-) ! I will be in town for the low budget but high value BarCamp Tdot and Drupal Camp Toronto and will NOT be going to Mesh. However, some of the other Bryght guys will probably go so we'll have the whole crazy Canadian Web 2.0 conference week covered.

Anyways, I am betting that some of the Mesh people will be in town a wee bit beforehand for DrupalCamp or BarCamp Tdot.

I am looking forward to (hopefully) meeting the following people as well as many others at DrupalCamp and BarCamp Tdot (as well as catching up with those I have already met):

  • Tara Hunt (I want to be a Pinko marketer!)
  • Rick Segal (love your blog and philosophy)
  • Alec Saunders (please come down from Ottawa and give us the scoop on Iotum, some sort of demo would be cool. Look forward to perhaps meeting you since I've been reading your stuff since 2003 or earlier)
  • Albert Lai (I don't 'get' BubbleShare, but perhaps a cool demo at BarCamp would help. Regardless love the enthusiasm and energy that comes through in your blog!)
  • David Crow (hope to get some tips on how to better organize DemoCamp Vancouver, BarCamp Vancouver and perhaps a Vancouver DrupalCamp in the future)
  • Brent Ashley (never met but exchanged blog comments over the years ( about his cool BlogChat widget)
  • Phillip Smith - man behind DrupalCamp and many other cool things
